At a time when being together, sharing food and physical contact has become a notion that is near impossible to grasp, we begin to ask ourselves, how can we share time together? How do we maintain and nourish a sense of community?

For some, isolation may be the respite needed to heal and grow in a somewhat overwhelming world. For others it can bring to light negative emotions, making us feel separated and alone. It is at a time like this that our sense of togetherness and community needs to be at its strongest. A foundation on which we can build, feel supported, and enable growth. But how can we connect, share and be together?

The Common Time residency aims to create a space where artists can share thoughts, creative ideas and community through food, film and writing. It is an opportunity to sit down together and eat and drink over a movie. To use this time to think about art, ecology and the environment in a relaxed space with friends.

Common Time invites you to embark on a journey through landscape and ecological discovery. Unravel a theme or raise a question of your choice and unearth the hidden treasures within them. To do this, each week an artist will choose a film and create a menu to accompany it. The online community will then come together, watch the film and eat together. Following this, the selected artist will later host a forum or discussion board after the film has been screened, to open up a creative discussion about themes raised.

The Film, book, texts, podcasts...

Ever had a film that you really want to watch but maybe don’t want to go through it alone? Or maybe you’d really like chat about the range of themes raised within it and need someone to bounce ideas off of. This is your chance to pull out those strange arty films you’ve had back locked on your watch list, dust it off and share it with the Common Time community.

As a starting point, Common Time feel that issues/topics/themes raised around sustainability, ecology, landscape and environment, are a good platform from which to work from. As this interacts with prominent climate matters further afield, while drawing on more intimate concerns rising in our communities and homes now. It also intersects well with ideas around food, waste, eating, gardening and of course sharing.

Choose a film that speaks to you and share it with the community for the ultimate movie night.

The Menu and recipes :

This can be as free as you wish and in no way needs to be complete menu from starter to dessert! Your menu could be recipes that you’ve been drooling over online, ideas for an imaginative and wacky dish you would make if you had access to the finest ingredients in the world, or simply your favourite movie snack. Crips and guac, popcorn, rice crispy cakes, anything goes! It doesn’t even need to be edible! Just so long as it relates to you, your film choice and is something you’d like to share. Common Time will then collate all foody dreams together, in the ultimate recipe book for all to access in the website.

The study group:

Accompanying research, ideas or book suggestions are also welcome! See this as an opportunity to spread the word about any interesting articles, podcasts or instagram posts you’ve seen and that relate to your practice. Common Time will host a study group page where you can access this research in order to spark innovative ideas for future works.

The residency will be led by each artist and to use as a platform for creative exchange, current ideas and artist awareness. Thus building a wider spread creative community, connecting artists and thinkers of all disciplines together across the globe
